Spec Musings

September 14, 2009

So, level 75 now, got Frostfire Bolt, and decided to try the whole Elementalist gig.

My current spec is doing good. I’m not having any problem soloing. The thing is, I’m very rarely soloing these days. I’m usually with at least one other person, and we’re running more and more instances. Our tank – though he’s really not specced or geared as a tank at this point – is a pally. We have two shamans in the party.  So healing, at least at this level, is plentiful. I’m identifying things that I need to do to avoid having to utilize all that healing. The other thing, of course, is DPS.

The people I play with are anything but hardcore. We enjoy getting achievements, reaching new content, getting new gear, all that, but we also are pretty laid back when it comes to things like wipes. We consider wipes part of the learning process, and the last thing we want to hear is whining about repair bills.

We tend to operate at a bit of a disadvantage, since we’re typically a four man group. We’ve been burned a number of times pugging, so we’re a bit cautious in that area. We tried UK at level, and had to stop at Keleseth. We came back a level later, and managed to get through Keleseth. Skarvald and Dalron shut us down, though.

One of our shamans is specced resto, the other resto with some dipping into other trees.. That kind of reflects the nature of our group. None of us is going all out for DPS. We play specs that we like to play. I’m a Frost Mage. I’m going to likely stay primarily a frost mage. However, the fact remains that I am still our group’s primary source of ranged and AOE DPS, so I try to get better. I pay attention to the theorycraft, but in the end, I’m very much led by what feels right. As I’ve gone up, I’ve developed a fondness for Brain Freeze procs, so I thought I’d like to branch a bit over into the Fire tree, and buff the free FB a bit. FFB typically goes deep fire, some Frost. That could be where I end up, but I’ve been looking at Ten’nen’s Frost/Fire build. I was also looking at this old post by Krizzlybear, and it gave me some ideas. Here’s what I ended up with at level 75.
